I don’t know how many times my secretary has told me that some small business owner was in the lobby wanting to talk to me about a “problem” he or she had.
The problem invariably turns out to be that they were cutting corners and decided to forego Workers Compensation insurance. After all – all of his employees loved him and some were even related to him. What could go wrong?
Plenty.
The Uninsured Employers Fund (UEF) is a state entity which was created to handle situations like this. So perhaps he thought he was home free. He was wrong. In Southern California, more than any other region in the world, doctors and lawyers can run up medical expenses faster than you can possibly imagine – even if the claim has not been accepted. If you turn to UEF, they will be the first to tell you that they are not really in the business of cost containment and when it’s all over and the case resolved, they will come after you for the grand total. This has been the ruin of more than one small business.
The moral of this story is simple… Workers Compensation insurance is not an optional expense.
